Highlighting the pinnacle Air Jordan releases of 2023, ranging from distinctive creations like the ‘Reimagined’ Air Jordan 3 to collaborative endeavours with icons such as Travis Scott and J Balvin.
The realm of Air Jordans in 2023 invites intriguing contemplation, where the notable entries may overshadow those that fall short. The collective spectrum comprises a blend of returning classics, fresh interpretations of retro models, and enduring collaborations that consistently captivate. Yet, within this spectrum, certain pairs on paper appear destined for success but ultimately miss the mark.
A prime illustration is the Air Jordan 1 “Royal Reimagined” – an inventive take on materials for a cherished and iconic colourway. Despite its roots, the concept did not seamlessly translate, leading the sneaker to linger on shelves unlike its popular “Reimagined” counterparts such as the “White/Cement” Air Jordan 3. The exclusions from this list encompass sneakers lacking a proper retail release and general releases that, while commonplace, failed to evoke a distinctive appeal (the “Thunder” Air Jordan 4s, for instance).
Turning away from what fell short, the spotlight is on what succeeded. Jordan Brand continues to collaborate with major cultural figures like J Balvin and Travis Scott, yielding releases of varying acclaim. Demonstrating an adept touch, Jordan Brand excels in reviving classic retros or introducing subtle modifications when familiarity sets in. These represent the epitome of Air Jordans for the year. — Louis Ackermann
10. Air Jordan 1 ‘Black/White’
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 15/2/23
Price: $200 (R3800)
The journey of Jordan Brand’s Air Jordan 1 High 85 model, designed to faithfully replicate the original 1985 silhouette, embarked on an unconventional path. Its initial release in early 2020 featured two iterations (a reversed black/red and a white/red from the “New Beginnings” pack), which deviated from the original colourways. Subsequent releases have exhibited a more intentional approach, marked by the eagerly awaited return of the “Neutral Grey” OG and the well-received introduction of a new “Georgetown” makeup. This year, the unveiling of another original colour – a simple yet effortlessly stylish black-and-white – occurred. While comparisons to the “Panda” theme may suggest more opportune timing, it doesn’t diminish the shoe’s inherent appeal. Consequently, it secures its position as one of the standout Jordan releases of the year.
9. Air Jordan 1 ‘Next Chapter’
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/3-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 20/5/23
Price: $200 (R3800)
For the second collaboration, Jordan Brand once again joined forces with the Spider-Verse franchise to reimagine the iconic Air Jordan 1 “Chicago.” This iteration delves deep into the theme of multiverse travel, a prominent element in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. While the initial collaboration paid homage to the franchise with comic-book-style patterns, this version takes a unique approach, incorporating glitch stylings for a distinctive aesthetic. However, what truly set this pair apart, particularly in my perspective, was its integration into the actual movie.
In a notable scene towards the end of the film, Miles Morales experiences glitches as he traverses different universes, and intriguingly, the Chicago 1s on his feet also undergo transformations. Initial online images might not have won me over, but upon witnessing them in person and appreciating the inventive movie integration, it becomes evident that the Air Jordan 1 “Next Chapter” stands out as one of the premier Jordans of 2023.
8. Union Los Angeles x Bephies Beauty Supply x Air Jordan 1 High
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/4-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 24/8/23
Price: $200 (R3800)
Since the launch of its highly sought-after Air Jordan 1 pack in 2018, Union Los Angeles has solidified itself as one of Jordan Brand’s frequent collaborators. While some releases may not have surpassed the standard set by the 2018 collection, Union consistently showcases its prowess in redefining the Air Jordan 1, even in a market oversaturated with the silhouette.
This year, Union embarked on another venture with the Air Jordan 1, and while it might not have surpassed its previous achievements, the brand’s ability to push the boundaries of the widely recognized silhouette is commendable. The three-way collaboration involving Union, Jordan Brand, and Bephies Beauty Supply (including a 1 Elevate High SP) offered a contemporary twist on the OG “Neutral Grey” 1s. Iconic details from the 2018 releases, such as the yellow logo tab and green stitching on the collar, were revisited. However, what truly elevated this iteration was the incorporation of woven leather from the heel to the toe. The fusion of an Air Jordan 1 with elements reminiscent of a Footscape Woven might seem unconventional, but it surprisingly worked.
For those who initially had reservations based on leaked images, experiencing the sneakers firsthand is recommended. The woven leather addition and the overall execution might just change your perspective and elevate these Air Jordan 1s from Union to a new level of appreciation.
7. Air Jordan 12 ‘Cherry’
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/5-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 28/10/23
Price: $210 (R4000)
I distinctly recall the release of these sneakers back in 2009—a period that oddly mirrors the current times. Much like today, the U.S. economy was grappling with a recession, with government funds directed towards wars. During that era, financial constraints were widespread, resulting in sneakers lingering on store shelves. I particularly remember the Air Jordan 12s taking about six months to sell out. At my local Foot Locker, they were discounted to $129.99 from the original $150 retail price. This wasn’t due to a lack of appreciation for the shoes; rather, the sneaker market was experiencing a notable lull in interest.
Similar sentiments may resonate today, with Jordans not swiftly selling out on release dates, especially when produced in larger quantities. However, the “White/Varsity Red” 12s, affectionately known as the “Cherries,” were an exception to this trend. They gained traction upon release, sparking jokes about pairing them with matching Denim Tears sweatsuits—a combination that I’m certain found its way into reality. As an OG Jordan sneaker that had been absent from the scene for some time, the “Cherries” managed to find relevance in today’s ever-changing market. It serves as a reminder that, even in a chaotic world, a well-crafted sneaker has the power to uplift and bring joy to people.
6. Air Jordan 11 ‘Gratitude’
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/6-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 9/12/23
Price: $230 (R4400)
Do you recall a time when Air Jordan 11s held a certain sacred status? It’s true that Jordan Brand has taken advantage of the sneaker’s popularity, introducing a plethora of colourways over the past decade. It’s a strategic move, evident in the quarterly earnings reports boasting record-breaking sales of Jordan 11s. Despite understanding the rationale behind it, there’s a sense of nostalgia for the era when this iconic shoe wasn’t regularly available in new variations.
In the 2000s, the unveiling of a new colourway for the Air Jordan 11 was a truly special occasion. One remarkable example occurred in 2006 when Jordan Brand infused a regal gold touch into a Concord-style base colourway, resulting in the “Defining Moments Pack” Air Jordan 11. This release created a frenzy in the sneaker community and is arguably one of the best interpretations of the silhouette outside of the original versions. The Air Jordan 11 “Gratitude,” set to drop this year, is the closest we’ll come to a retro version, featuring slightly milky soles but maintaining an overall similar aesthetic. While the impact might not be as profound as it was in the mid-2000s, it still resonates with a sense of appreciation for this iconic silhouette.
5. A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan 5
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/7-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 24/11/23
Price: $225 (R4300)
It’s understandable if you’re not currently brimming with excitement about A Ma Maniére’s Air Jordans. Their frequent releases, while generally aesthetically pleasing, have made it a bit challenging to navigate through the latest offerings. The store has a knack for crafting clean colourways, intertwining them with just enough narrative, but the sheer regularity of releases can be overwhelming. Additionally, the ongoing investigation into A Ma Maniére owner James Whitner’s reselling business has cast a shadow over products from the Whitaker Group empire.
Setting aside these considerations, A Ma Maniére’s Air Jordans, when viewed independently, still possess an appealing aesthetic. Given Nike and Jordan’s keen interest in having Whitner’s shop reimagine retro shoes, it was only a matter of time before an Air Jordan 5 collaboration materialized. The A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan 5s maintain the store’s trademark of delivering clean and understated colourways—ones that may not turn heads dramatically but still manage to make a distinct statement.
4. Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low ‘Olive’
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/8-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 26/4/23
Price: $150 (R2900)
Another Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low? Perhaps there are more innovative choices deserving a spot on the “Best Air Jordans of 2023” list. However, in an era where immediate sellouts and high resale values are becoming rarer, Travis Scott’s collaborations have demonstrated a longevity that surpasses contemporary standards. Moreover, he continues to reign supreme on SNKRS.
While there may be a hint of weariness associated with these frequent Air Jordan projects, compounded by rumours of a “Black Olive” colourway in 2024, the reality is that these shoes remain relevant and highly sought after. Despite not pushing the boundaries of design, they still resonate as exceptionally well-crafted sneakers. While we anticipate the debut of the rapper’s unnamed original silhouette next year, the current release, including the Golf variation from 2023, serves as a poignant reminder of Travis Scott’s enduring influence in the realm of footwear.
3. J Balvin x Air Jordan 3
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/9-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 23/9/23
Price: $250 (R4800)
J Balvin’s collaborative Air Jordans have experienced varying degrees of success. The Air Jordan 1, featuring a bold design, was widely embraced and commands resale prices exceeding its retail value in the secondary market. On the other hand, the Air Jordan 2, more ambitious with its light-up tongue, quickly found its way to sale racks and is available well below its original $300 price. However, both share a distinctive reflection of Balvin’s personality, instantly recognizable as uniquely his own. No convoluted narratives were needed; they essentially embody J Balvin in sneaker form.
The Air Jordan 3 continues this trend, offering the same signature style but in a more wearable package. Its clean upper, subdued elephant print, and gradient trim pay homage to the sunsets in Balvin’s hometown of Medellín, Colombia. This accessibility, coupled with the maintenance of his recognizable style, culminate in what can be considered Balvin’s best sneaker collaboration to date. The rollout of the shoe was also noteworthy, receiving a memorable co-sign from DJ Khaled.
2. Air Jordan 3 ‘White Cement’ Reimagined
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/10-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 11/3/23
Price: $210 (R4000)
The trend of aged sneakers is approaching a point of saturation, but for certain pairs, like this Air Jordan 3, it feels entirely fitting. What sets this apart is Jordan Brand’s restrained approach to the faux-vintage treatment. The midsoles and heel tab possess a cream tint, mimicking the appearance of an original 1988 pair over time. However, the focus of the remastering was on refining the intricate details of the model.
The silhouette’s shape was sharpened, returning it closer to the original than it had been in years. Even the heel padding was streamlined to more accurately match the specifications of the original. The iconic elephant print was also adjusted to resemble its appearance in 1988, although there were some quality control issues with the print that might be a point of contention for some enthusiasts. Nevertheless, acknowledging that no shoe is flawless, and even earlier retros faced similar discrepancies, the ultimate goal is wearability. This release brings us as close as possible to experiencing the feel of wearing an original 1988 pair of Air Jordan 3s in 2023.
1. Nike SB x Air Jordan 4
![](https://dudeawesomesa.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/11-1121x628.png)
Release Date: 17/3/23
Price: $225 (R4300)
The contender for the Best Air Jordan of the year, and quite possibly the best sneaker of the year overall, is the subject of eager anticipation. The journey of this sneaker from initial scepticism to widespread acclaim is noteworthy. Initial rumours hinted at a Nike SB x Air Jordan 4 release, with skaters like Paul Rodriguez and Eric Koston spotted wear-testing an all-black pair. With the growing popularity of the “Black Cat” 4s, expectations soared. However, disappointment set in when it was revealed that the sneakers would be released in white and green. Yet, the final product, featuring white and green hues alongside a gum sole and touches of red, exceeded expectations.
Beyond aesthetics, Nike incorporated valuable data from skaters to enhance not only the fit and comfort of the 4 for skateboarding but also its overall wearability, akin to the SB Dunk. While this collaboration isn’t the first between SB and Jordan Brand, dating back to the Air Jordan 1 SB in 2014 with artist Craig Stecyk, the SB 4s have left a lasting impact. The release day chaos ensued, with drops at skate shops and later restocks, sparking discussions, controversies, and even viral moments like Meek Mill attempting to negotiate a deal with a reseller at a sneaker event.
While 2023 may not have been the most significant year for Jordan Brand in terms of high-heat releases, the SB 4 collaboration stands out as a prime example of getting it right. Kudos to Nike SB for a successful partnership that has captivated sneaker enthusiasts and sparked widespread acclaim.
